My parents have always bought travel insurance before going overseas anywhere on vacation. They were especially vigilant about buying travel insurance when my sister and I were children. As it turned out my parents were wise to get travel insurance. I vividly recall the time my parents took my sister and I to Benidorm, which is a popular resort on the Costa Blanca in Spain. My grandparents went on that trip and so did my aunt, uncle and three cousins Amanda, Alison and Joanne. On the first day there I raced my cousin Joanne up the slippery marble steps by the hotel pool. I slipped and smashed both of my incisors, which had just grown in. My parents had to take me to a dentist in Benidorm and if they had not had travel insurance then this visit could have taken a serious dent out of the spending money they had taken with them for the vacation. That was not the only accident that happened while we were on vacation. My mother once passed out in an elevator due to dehydration and she smashed her face up. Experience has taught me that accidents have a habit of happening on vacations. That is why I will never go overseas without travel insurance.

My friend told me of an old co-worker we used to work with and his ordeal while in the Cancun, Mexico recently. He loved Mexico and traveled down there with his wife numerous times before. This recent trip was like all their other trips to Mexico, except on this one, he got extremely ill while there. He had some sort of bad infection and he probably shouldn’t have been traveling in the first place. Needless to say, they lost all there reservations money and had to pay extra for the changing of flights, so this vacation cost them a bundle. They didn’t have cheap travel insurance. I don’t think they ever did the numerous times they have been to Mexico. He turned out to be ok, but it took him awhile to feel 100 percent. I know now that they will definitely compare travel insurance and purchase some travelers insurance for any future trips anywhere. I feel bad about his getting ill and I am sure all the money they lost, made him feel worse. Traveling anywhere these days, it pays to have travelers insurance, you just never know.

Every year, the fifth grade class at our city's intermediate school takes a trip to the nation's capitol, Washington, D.C. It is a very exciting trip for the kids and the parents get to accompany their children if they can. The trip lasts about a week and the kids get to see some of the most fascinating and exciting sites in Washington. Because the children are away from home and under the care of their teachers, the school requires that the parents provide travel and health insurance to cover their children.

My sister and brother in law do more traveling than anyone I know. They have made at least two huge trips every year as long as I have known them. They would never book a trip without travel insurance. This year it was put to the test. They had planned a trip to Viet Nam and were all set. They had their visas and all plans were completed. Unfortunately with all of the rain we have had, a tree fell on their house and practically destroyed it. The good news is that no one was hurt. I have two sets of good married friends who travel abroad every few years or so. They are all very adept on finding the best travel deals and planning their itinerary. From the time I started traveling out of country I have always made sure I had travel insurance. It just made sense to me to spend a little money to insure I did not have to spend a lot if something went wrong. I have yet to have to use it, but I don’t consider it money wasted. Over the years I have known too many people who did not buy travel insurance and paid the price. For some reason people who have all the reason to buy travel insurance don’t. It is like they think nothing is going to happen because they are on vacation. Even knowing they have a pending health issue they don’t buy the insurance they need. One lady I know decided to save a few dollars by not buying insurance. She spent all but the first two day's of her vacation in the hospital. She saved a few bucks only to spend thousands. I have traveled quite a bit over the years and never felt the need for travel insurance. Most of the time everything went well. A friend of mine was not that lucky. She planned an elaborate trip to Europe to see Italy, Germany and Switzerland and it was a very expensive trip. She told me that she never goes on a trip like that without buying travel insurance and she always buys it online. The last time she started her trip her baggage was lost at the very start of the trip and she had to shop for clothes at every stop she made in her travels. It certainly was a huge inconvenience but at the end of the trip she was paid for everything she had bought and also for everything that was in her luggage. Replacing all those things would have been very costly for her and she would not have been able to afford to do it without insurance.

I am always learning things from my family it seems, things that I will apply to my own life to make everything that much easier! My older brother, David, most recently taught me the best lesson about traveling that I have ever learned: always buy trip cancellation insurance! He had a huge and lengthy trip planned to Hawaii, and he had to cancel the trip because he got really sick a day before he was supposed to leave! If he had not, he would have lost a ton of money, because the cancellation policy dictates that you owe them around fifteen percent of the trip costs for last minute cancellations. My girlfriend was telling me about a vacation horror story, which actually turned out on a positive note because of travelers insurance. As the story was told one of the guys she works with went to Costa Rica a month ago for vacation. He went with a friend and the both were pumped to see monkeys. After getting there and having a cab driver take them to their hotel, the unthinkable happened. From how I understand it, the cab driver brought them to their hotel and after they paid and got out, the driver through it in gear and shot out of there with the two friend’s luggage still in the back. Whether or not the guy knew he still had their luggage is up for debate.

Bottom line is the first few hours in Costa Rica their entire wardrobe was lost. I don’t know about the friend but the guy who works with my girlfriend had travelers insurance. After a call to the insurance agent, a claim was filed and he received cash for his lost clothes once back. I guess he wasn’t to mad because it was an opportunity to buy a new wardrobe.

After the lease expires on my apartment, I have been planning a trip over to Europe for an indefinite amount of time. I say indefinite because I plan to buy a one way to London and then take it from there, roaming hostel to hostel. I have never been out of the country past Canada and Mexican border towns and just feel like it is time to do this. Before stepping knee deep into corporate America I want to see what else is out there in the world. I’m tired of hearing other people’s amazing stories and nudges to see the world. What I am not sure about is whether or not to get travelers insurance.

I know it is the smart decision but considering I don’t have a set game plan, more of the happy wanderer approach, I’m not sure if travelers insurance would be too expensive. There is cheap travel insurance out there and if I do sign up for some it has to be affordable. My mom really wants me to get it just in case an emergency occurs. I don't travel frequently, but my husband flies every other month or so. We have never looked into travel insurance before, so I was curious what types of issues travel insurance would cover.

The main point of purchase for travel insurance would be medical coverage and/or evacuation coverage. Medical coverage would be for international medical conditions/emergencies. Evacuation travelers insurance would cover the need to evacuate someplace and the expenses that are associated with such evacuation.

Vacation travel insurance would cover not only the interruption of a trip or the expenses associated with the cancellation of a trip, but it would include the medical/evacuation coverage as well.

Another travel insurance type is flight insurance, which would obviously cover anything that happens related to an accident while flying. If one was to rent a car, the travel insurance that would benefit would be collision damage insurance.

Another travel insurance that is offered is luggage/personal possession loss insurance, which would cover the theft or loss of your valuables, business suits, cameras, etc. while on your vacation.

I certainly know the costs of traveling. There has been more than one time that my husband's luggage didn't make it to the airport with him or he's had a flight delay or cancellation. I can certainly see the benefits in having travelers insurance.

One of the least expensive things for traveling that can have a huge payoff is travel insurance. I was helping my mom book a trip recently and insisted that she get travel insurance because her health can be unpredictable. She has a bad back and when it goes out, travel is out of the question. I've been using travel insurance for the same reason, too, and more than once, I've had to cash in a few tickets because my back is bad. I'd love to find a miracle cure for a bad back, but until I do, travel insurance is in my and my mom's future.

Since I've had such good experiences with travel insurance, I will not go anywhere without it and am recommending that all the people who are planning to come visit us this winter. If their flight gets canceled by bad weather or they get a cold, they can cash out on the insurance policy and really cut their losses. Of course, they will be missed, but they can always come when the weather settles down, to come down and enjoy warm, sunny weather, and some great food and shopping.
